On Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, a Marine Lieutenant said about combat:
"Actually, it's a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. ... It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right upfront with you, I like brawling."
That has got to be the greatest thing I've ever heard. People have questioned that remark; people who also like to see the war in Iraq as an ongoing American atrocity. Obviously he is not a blood-thirsty bastard, his past actions assure it. I see this as an attempt to bring humor to a situation that, though the most serious thing in the world, needs it. Personally, if I didn't laugh at everything, I'd end up crying at the world. This excellent marine was trying to raise morale, and trying to convey a sense that the soldiers wanted to be there and knew what they were getting into.
And you know what, it is fun to shoot people. The rise in paintball popularity makes that evident.
Oh yeah, here's some links to the press reactions. Quite clearly, most are critical of the officer.
